In working with a new platform, there are always new terms to learn. Sitecore is no different in this, but our glossary will help you master these topics quickly.
The Content Editor is the hierarchical view of your site(s) content and settings, providing a view to create and edit content separate of the presentation.
The Content Tree is another way of describing the hierarchical repository structure that contains your site content , information architecture and system settings.
A definition item to map requests to layouts and components on an item. A typical device is something like an mobile device (done via user-agent matching) or a print device (done through querystring matching)
Insert Options are settings applied to items or item templates which dictate what items can go where in the repository, and define the information architecture for your site.
An addressable unit of content made up of fields that contain information.
Defines the overall appearance of a page and consists of a layout definition item stored in the Content Tree and a .NET aspx or cshtml file stored under the web root.
The Media Library is a location within the content tree for storing assets and images.
The Page Editor is the presentation-centric view of your site. Most common users use this view to navigate a preview version of their site and edit content and design options in-line on the page.
A placeholder is a Sitecore-specific tag within a layout or sublayout which allows the dynamic placement of components within it.
The definition of the layout and components that are served for requests under each device type.
Defines the appearance of an area of a page and consists of a Rendering definition item stored in the Content Tree and an XSLT file stored
under the web root.
The Sitecore desktop is an administrative interface which provides access to all Sitecore functionality, including the Page Editor and Content Editor, as well as all other tools (as appropriate via security).
Standard Values are the defaults for an item template. These allow you to set things such as layout, workflow, security as defaults.

The Template Manager is a tool within the Sitecore Desktop for easily editing your data template definitions.
The workbox is a tool within Sitecore for easily viewing the status of items within workflows which you have access to.
